The second of the new series of NZ Art Guild challenges is due by 8am tomorrow morning. This time the work could be in any medium but had to include, in some way, the following: umbrella, orange, innocence, triangle. The orange background in my work is a painting I did while studying orange about 18 months ago. The baby is my grandson Rory. The umbrella is obvious I hope. The triangles? There are two triangle shaped groups of flowers and a lighter triangular patch of orange in the centre. The final piece is a mixed media digital work, 10x12cm, titled “sleep of the innocent“.

After George Morandi
As a member of the NZ Art Guild, I try to take their challenges as often as I can. Sometimes it is about using a particular style or technique, sometimes it is about being inspired by a certain artist. The most recent Master’s Month artist was George Morandi. I had not heard of him, so some research was needed. You can see some of his work here.
I had two attempts at this; the first was a watercolour which focused on the way he let shapes run into each other by using wet in wet colours. Morandi’s watercolours also had a lot of white space, and quite distinct shapes.
For my second attempt I reworked one of his oil paintings as a collage using hand painted paper, scrapbook papers, glue, ink and pen. The collage won the ‘most creative use of the theme’ award.

Being prepared with lots of paintings!
The Taranaki Rhododendron Festival, and the Fringe Festival, are both coming up at the end of the month. The local Patchwork and Quilting group are holding a week long exhibition in the Hunter Shaw building in Patea in support of these garden extravaganzas. They have invited me to be the sole artist exhibiting amongst the textiles. Fantastic!
In early December I am due to start exhibiting again at the Albany Garden Centre in Auckland, just in time for their Christmas trade. And in early November I am contributing to a charity auction at the Gift of Art Gallery in Christchurch. You can visit their blog here. The NZ Art Guild is busy planning towards a major charity event to be held at the Bruce Mason Centre (Auckland) in February 2009, which I will be exhibiting at also. This is to raise funds for the Leukemia & Blood Foundation – a link to more detail is on the right hand side on the Guild’s website here.
On top of all that, I have booked an art showcase page on Etsy for November 2nd, which means my Etsy offerings will potentially be seen by up to 10,000 in one 24 hour period.
Why am I telling you all this? Because it explains why I am painting up a storm, painting like there is no tomorrow, like paint supplies are about to run out worldwide – and loving it LOL. My wall of 4×4 canvas is becoming less like a wall, and more like a wee room divider, day by day. It’s a good thing.
Economic recession? Doom and gloom? Financial ruin? Whatever! There are opportunities out there for those prepared to just keep on working, so that’s what l’m doing – and I would encourage others to do the same. We all create our own economic future every day; what have you done toward your future this weekend?

Reach Out unveiled
88 artists (including me!) have contributed to ‘Reach Out’ by creating one small individual artwork. They were provided with a small wooden panel and given a theme to paint to. The theme this year is ‘On your mind’ and interpretation of this is entirely up to the artists. When all of these individual artworks are combined they create an overall image and a stunning one of a kind artwork measuring 1.3m x 1.5m. The overall image of the collaborative artwork is kept secret, even from those participating in it, until the unveiling of the artwork on the opening night of the NZ Art Guild annual exhibition.
This year not only can you own the collaboration in its’ entirety, but you can purchase a Limited Edition Print or an individual boxed print of your favorite piece. To view all the details of this piece and how you can get your hands on it go here…
